Who Are the Brethren? (And Why Does the World Need Them?)
Share
Somewhere beneath the glittering lights of Las Vegas, past the opulent apartments of the Alaric Building and through doors that do not appear on any floor plan, there is a room that has been keeping the world from ending for a very long time.
It belongs to the Brethren.
You have probably never heard of them. That is entirely by design.
A Problem That Required a Solution
In the beginning — and we mean the actual beginning, when three brothers named Odin, Vili, and Ve were busy shaping the world — things got complicated. Supernatural forces have a way of getting out of hand when gods are involved, and the chaos that followed centuries of divine experimentation left Earth with a problem: creatures and powers that mortal civilization was never equipped to handle.
Vili — now known simply as Vin — decided something had to be done. Not with armies or weapons, but with people. The right kind of people.
His conviction was simple, almost stubborn in its clarity: character is innate. A leopard does not change its spots. Someone who lived their first life with genuine moral courage, compassion, and purpose would carry those qualities into a second. And a second life, it turned out, was something Vin could offer.
The Offer
At the moment of their natural death, certain individuals receive a choice.
Not a demand. Not a recruitment pitch. A quiet, considered offer: pass on to whatever lies beyond, or come back — different, stronger, bound by oath to protect the balance between the mortal world and everything that lurks beyond it.
Soldiers. Teachers. Healers. Artists. Farmers. The Brethren have been drawn from every corner of human experience and every era of history. There is no single profile, no ideal candidate. What matters is the quality of the life already lived.
Those who decline are allowed to go in peace. No pressure, no consequence.
Those who accept wake up with something new — a latent ability from their first life, finally unlocked. Extended lifespans. Ancient knowledge they could not have come by naturally. And a purpose larger than anything their first life prepared them for.
Vin reviews every candidate himself. He always has.
The Mission
For centuries, the Brethren’s mission was Earth. Contain the supernatural. Prevent the kind of escalation that could trigger something catastrophic — something ancient texts call Ragnarök. Keep the veil between the paranormal and the mortal world intact.
They were very good at it. Quietly, invisibly, without credit or recognition, they have been holding the line since before most human civilizations learned to write things down.
But the world got bigger.
Enter Draignatur
Three thousand years ago, a young girl named Tupi made a quiet choice that neither she nor anyone watching fully understood at the time. That choice set something in motion across worlds. Now, with the emergence of Draignatur — Dragon World — and the growing connections between realms, the Brethren’s purpose is expanding beyond anything Vin originally imagined. What began as a planetary operation is becoming something far larger: cosmic stewards, guardians of order across worlds that are only just beginning to find each other.
The Alaric Building is still home. But home, it turns out, is just the starting point.
Curious about how Dragon World connects to the Brothers of Odin universe? It starts with an egg, a girl, and a choice made three thousand years ago.
