Have you ever felt like your manuscript disappeared into the publishing void? That's exactly where I find myself right now. According to my publisher, we've entered the "page design stage" — whatever that means. Three weeks have passed without updates, and my fingernails are paying the price.

The Deafening Silence of Publishing Limbo

Is this normal in publishing? The silence stretches like an endless corridor, and I'm left wondering if my manuscript has fallen into some forgotten corner of a designer's desk.

Every morning, I check my email with the kind of hope usually reserved for lottery tickets. Nothing. Not even a "we're still working on it" courtesy note.

What Even IS the "Page Design Stage"?

For those as confused as I am, the page design stage apparently involves formatting the manuscript into actual book pages. This includes decisions about fonts, spacing, chapter headings, and how the text will physically appear on the page.

At least, that's what Google tells me. My publisher hasn't exactly been forthcoming with details.

The Emotional Rollercoaster

The waiting game plays tricks on your mind. One moment, I'm convinced my book will emerge as a beautifully designed masterpiece. Next, I'm certain they've lost my files and are too embarrassed to tell me.

My husband has started hiding the nail clippers. It's probably for the best.

Is This Normal? A Question for the Ages

Fellow authors assure me this glacial pace is "part of the process," but that doesn't make the waiting any easier. Publishing seems to operate in its own time zone — one where weeks pass like minutes for them and like decades for anxious authors.

Has anyone else experienced this particular form of publishing purgatory? I'd love to hear I'm not alone in this beautifully torturous journey toward seeing my words in print.

Until then, I'll be here, refreshing my inbox and contemplating whether it's too desperate to send a "just checking in" email for the third time this week.
