Blog or Newsletter: Do You Actually Need Both?

Blog or Newsletter: Do You Actually Need Both?

I have been asking myself this question for a while now, and I still don't have a clean answer. So let's think through it together.

I enjoy writing the blog. That part surprised me — I didn't expect to, and here I am genuinely looking forward to it. The posts are getting better. The voice is getting clearer. I'm starting to sound like myself instead of a press release.

But then there's the newsletter. Which is a whole separate thing. A separate list, a separate platform, a separate reason for someone to sign up, a separate piece of content to create and send. And the question I keep coming back to is: if I'm already writing the blog, do I actually need it?

Here's what I've landed on, at least for now.

The blog lives on the website. It's there for anyone who finds it — through search, through a link, through stumbling in from somewhere. It's permanent. It accumulates. It's the long game.

The newsletter is the nudge. It's how you tell the people who already like you that something new exists. Without it, you can write the best post of your life and it just sits there waiting for someone to wander past. Which, if I'm being honest, is exactly what has been happening.

I have posts that have been sitting unpublished for months. Good ones. Nobody saw them because I wasn't sending anyone to look. That's not a content problem. That's a distribution problem.

So yes. It turns out you probably do need both. The blog is the thing. The newsletter is how people find out the thing exists.

I sent my first real newsletter this morning. Six subscribers. It's a start. 🐉
